Florence
The Ponte Vecchio ("Old Bridge") is a medieval stone arch bridge over the Arno River in Florence. Known for its shops built along its edges, it's the only bridge in Florence that survived World War II intact. Originally hosting butchers, it now houses jewelers and art dealers. The bridge was first mentioned in 996 and rebuilt after a flood in 1345. During World War II, it was spared from destruction by German forces, allegedly on Hitler's orders. The Vasari Corridor, built in 1565 (red roof, lower right of the frame), runs above the shops, connecting Palazzo Vecchio with Palazzo Pitti. |
