Castello Sforzesco
Rising from Milan's heart, the Castello Sforzesco boasts a rich history spanning over 600 years. Originally built as a fortress by the Visconti family in the 14th century, it was transformed into a grand residence by the Sforza dynasty in the 15th century. The castle's imposing walls and towers served defensive purposes while housing renowned artists like Leonardo da Vinci. Though extensively rebuilt in the 19th century, it now stands as a symbol of Milan's power and artistic heritage, housing esteemed museums and art collections. |
Incription immediatelly above the bells reads: "AETERNVM STET PIETATIS OPVS", which translates to "May the work of piety stand forever." The carved text above the religious figure is "PROTEGE NOS", meaning "Protect us." Under the bas-relief of King Umberto I of Italy there is an inscription in Latin: "HVMBERTO PRIMO / CIVITAS HANC TVRRIM RESTITVENS / DICAVIT ANNO MCMV," which translates to "Umberto Primo, the city, having restored this tower, dedicated it in the year 1915"—commemorating King Umberto I and his role in restoring the tower. |
