Library of Congress

The Library of Congress, established in 1800, is the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States. Located just southeast of the U.S. Capitol building, it houses millions of books, manuscripts, and other materials. Originally intended to serve Congress, it has grown into a national library housing the world's largest collection (over 170 million items). Widely recognized as a national treasure, the Library of Congress plays a vital role in preserving national knowledge and culture, with iconic architecture and significant collections open to the public.
