How Rivers Are Formed: The after-snow aerial view of this forest pocket behind our house illustrates an early stage of river formation. It begins with rainfall or, in this case, melting snow that flows downhill through tiny channels called rills. These rills converge into gullies, as seen in the lower left portion of the photo on the left below. The water merges with other flows to form a short stream, which then joins the river about 250m (800ft) beyond this scene. Twenty-five miles (40km) downstream, the river empties into the Chesapeake Bay off the Atlantic Ocean.
