El Yunque National Forest

Located in northeastern Puerto Rico, El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Spanning over 28,000 acres, it is a biodiversity hotspot and a powerful cultural symbol, often appearing in folklore as the throne of the Taíno deity Yúcahu. The forest is renowned for its lush landscapes, including waterfalls, Taíno petroglyphs, and the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot. Designated a crown reserve in 1876, it is one of the oldest nature reserves in the Western Hemisphere. Today, it remains a premier destination for hiking and ecological research.
