Old Well and South Building

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, founded in 1789, is the first public university in the United States to admit students. Its iconic Old Well, modeled after a classical temple, symbolizes good luck and academic tradition, and it currently is the logo of the university. The adjacent South Building, completed in 1814, serves as one of the university’s oldest structures and houses administrative offices, including the Chancellor’s office. Known for its historic campus and academic excellence, UNC Chapel Hill is a leading institution recognized for its contributions to research, public service, and higher education innovation.

Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower

The Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower was completed in 1931, named after John Motley Morehead III and Rufus Lenoir Patterson II, two key figures in the funding and realization of the bell tower. It stands 172 feet tall and houses a carillon of 12 bells, originally manually operated but now mechanized. The tower is topped by a nine-foot clock face on each side and is surrounded below by a hedge and lawn. The bells chime regularly, marking time and playing music, making it a cherished symbol of tradition and university spirit.
