Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
Duomo di Firenze (west façade)
The Duomo façade showcases twelve Apostle statues, with the Madonna and Child at the center. Created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of the neo-Gothic façade completion, these marble sculptures were crafted by various Italian artists. Each apostle, identifiable by traditional attributes (and name carved below), occupies a niche in the upper façade. While not original to the medieval cathedral, these statues represent a 19th-century Gothic revival, seamlessly blending with older elements. Their elevated position contributes to the Duomo's imposing presence, offering a visible testament to Florence's artistic heritage. |
The Last Judgement fresco on the dome of Florence Cathedral, painted by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari between 1572 and 1579, portrays the final judgment of souls. Covering 3,600 square meters, it is one of the world's largest frescoes, depicting the Christian concept of final judgment, with Christ in the center as judge, surrounded by angels and saints. The blessed rise toward Heaven, while the damned are dragged into Hell. Painted in the Mannerist style, the fresco's dramatic figures and vibrant colors enhance the dome’s grandeur, which was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, making it a stunning artistic and religious focal point. |
